The University of Virginia School of Medicine's Medical Simulation Center (MSC) is seeking a Simulation Research and Development Specialist to join the team in Charlottesville, VA. The School of Medicine's Medical Simulation Center is one of the top-ranked centers of its kind in the country and is driven by its mission to advance the role of simulation technology in the enhancement of medical education through the development, application, and assessment of learner-centered educational methods. The MSC is located at the School of Medicine; this position will help fulfill this mission by assisting with simulation-based research and curriculum design. Continuing the collaborative atmosphere promoted by The University of Virginia School of Medicine, the Medical Simulation Center functions in an interdisciplinary, multi-specialty environment working to promote advances in simulation through the development of innovative research, education, and quality improvement initiatives. The MSC has recently formed a Simulation Alliance with the School of Nursing's Clinical Simulation Learning Center that combines the personnel, space, and assets of the two centers to improve simulation education for all participants.

The successful candidate will manage, under the guidance of the operations director and relevant faculty members, the research operations of the Medical Simulation Center.

Job Responsibilities Include:
  • Provides direction and assists to develop and support the overall mission, vision, and strategic goals of the University of Virginia Medical Simulation Center (MSC) related to research and education activities.
  • Takes a lead role in research activities for MSC, including updating and amending IRB documents and interfacing with faculty, students, staff, participants, and external stakeholders to facilitate research efforts.
  • Reviews evaluates and monitors the quantity and quality of research conducted within the MSC.
  • Works with the administration on budgets, reporting, and other requests to maintain clarity and transparency of research activities.
  • Oversees related financial duties such as preparing budgets for grants/projects, and managing monies related to research projects.
  • Promotes and interfaces simulation research throughout University of Virginia Health whenever possible.
  • Responsible for the application of principles and techniques of instructional design in the maintenance and support of medical simulation curricula in coordination with faculty and under the oversight of the SOM Curriculum Committee.
  • Coordinates with staff and faculty for the design and delivery of new, revised, or existing courses.
  • Advises, assists, and collaborates with faculty, educators, and staff to develop and implement curricula, placing special emphasis on innovative instructional modalities.
  • Assists Medical Director(s) in organization and oversight of faculty development, aids in training faculty for the design and delivery of effective instruction through innovative technology.
  • Researches, evaluates, and identifies new learning methods and instructional technology to promote leading-edge evidence-based education.
  • Facilitates and supports the development of content for simulation scenarios.
  • Coordinates timelines and work plans for simulation curriculum development and implementation, annual reviews, revision, and course evaluations.
  • Reviews simulation-based curriculum for adherence to best practices.
  • Solicit and systematically reviews feedback to improve the quality of simulation activities.
  • Functions as a backup simulation specialist in periods of peak demand with an expectation of becoming a Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) and/or Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) within an appropriate time frame. (These certifications are provided by the international simulation organization, Society for Simulation in Healthcare.).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Master's degree
Experience: At least four years of relevant experience.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.
